Rome’s Quiet Achiever - Villa Borghese

by Ruby Kammer

In some ways Rome is like any big city in the world because it is constantly on the go with outdoor activities for the citizens and visitors to the city. So when you visit Rome, the pace of seeing and enjoying such a busy metropolis can wear out even the most intrepid traveller. So to find that peace and quiet where you can still enjoy the best of Rome in a more tranquil setting, head to Villa Borghese.

The 148 acres of this tranquil setting is not the largest retreat of its kind but you will find museums there, along with a beautiful artificial lake and aviaries to enjoy as well. In the 16th century Cardinal Borghese set about to create a beautiful villa based on the geometric model of Versailles. The Cardinal even provided the initial sketch that was used to construct the villa that is at the heart of the compound.

The man made lake was added in the 18th century to the center of Villa Borghese. To add to the scenic vision of the lake, a small Ionic style temple was added which was dedicated to the God of Healing.

Cardinal Borghese’s love of birds is reflected in his aviaries at the site where he could keep and enjoy exotic peacocks, ostriches and other lovely species on the grounds where gazelles used to graze.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Villa Borghese was handed over to the city of Rome for a public park. Since then much has been done to improve the location, including the addition of a number of temples, many artistic fountains and many fine sculptures just as can be found in the city. When admiring the sculptures around the grounds, don’t be surprised if you find the original Tritons exactly like the ones you saw at the Fountain of the Moor in the Piazza Novona. These sculptures at Villa Borghese are the originals for that fountain. The ones you see in the Piazza are replicas that were made in the 19th century.

For 100 years the Villa Borghese has welcomed the public to enjoy the many delights it contains. There are numerous seasonable events you may come across on your visit, including horse jumping events in Siena Square. The beautiful Piazza di Siena amphitheater commonly is used for outdoor concerts which you can take in before touring the botanical gardens. And take time to admire the lovely Baroque 18th century arch called the ‘Arco di Settimio Severo’.

If you get a bit faint from hunger, not to worry, there is a small bar in the center of the Villa where you can find tasty and authentic Italian pasta or just sit back and recuperate your energies over a Campari. And when you are ready to move on, not far from the cafe are the pavilions that were shown at the 1911 Word Exposition.

Without fail though, most tourists are drawn to the many museums that have become popular on the grounds of Villa Borghese.

An outstanding example is The Museo e Galleria Borghese which has a number of wonderful Bernini sculptures who is the artist who had so much influence in creating many of the famous fountains in the city. Here you can view some of Bernini’s indoor work including Abduction of Proserpina by Pluto. But this gallery also has a good assortment of works from many great Renaissance masters including Raphael and Titian.

The original summer residence for Pope Julius II that he used in 1553 can be found in the Villa Giulia. The name of that villa, the Museo Nazionale Etrusco lets us know that a tour of the museum will let us see some fascinating Etruscan art works that were found in excavations in the hills that surround Rome.

It is not hard to find the entrance to Villa Borghese as they are located north of the Spanish Steps. Look between the Porta Pinciana at one end of the Via Veneto and the Piazza del Poppolo and you will find the entrance to the park. You will be glad you did because spending a few hours in the Villa Borghese is fun, relaxing and a great way to continue sightseeing in a more tranquil environment. After passing an afternoon in this scenic park, you will be ready to get back to the city for a busy touring schedule or a fast paced social time in the exciting world of Rome’s nightlife.

Scottish Castles: Balmoral

by Angus MacLeod

Tourism is now one of Scotland’s most important industries and each year more and more visitors spend time in the country for a multitude of reasons. While Edinburgh seems to have a festival for every week of the year but most visitors are most excited to visit the castle. At times Scotland appears to be a nation of castles (which is understandable when you consider it’s turbulent past) and a great many are open to the public. Balmoral Castle is a 5 star visitor attraction at Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Following the Union of the Crowns, in 1603, Royal Family of Great Britain seemed to have lost all interest in Scotland. However, in 1822, Sir Walter Scott organized a trip to Scotland for King George IV which became known as the “one and twenty daft days”. Scott ensured the visit was a rich pageant incorporating all of his romantic ideas of medieval Scotland.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, as had the whole of society, had been heavily influenced by Sir Walter Scott’s novels which gave Scotland a romantic appeal. During his trip to Scotland George IV had stayed at Balmoral Estate. The estate dates back to 1390 and was where King Robert II of Scotland had once had a hunting lodge. These facts, and the favorable report from the doctor (Sir James Clark) led Queen Victoria to hire the estate, for their vacation, sight unseen.

Although the property in which they stayed in at Balmoral was rather small (it had rooms much smaller than those they were used to) the pair quickly fell in love with the place. They spent many vacations there taking country walks together and, in 1852, Prince Albert bought the whole estate for about 30,000.

The Royal Family had grown and it was abundantly clear that a new, larger, building was needed desperately. The new residence was to be much larger and named Balmoral Castle. The architect, William Smith from Aberdeen, designed the castle which was completed in 1856.

Ever since the Balmoral estate became the private property of Prince Albert it has remained the private property of the British Royal Family and is not considered part of the royal estate. Today the working estate consists of over 100 buildings spread over an area of some 50,000 acres of land.

Balmoral Castle had witnessed some momentous personal moments in the history of the royal family. Of course Victoria and Albert had many happy memories and this was, most probably, the main reason why she spent so much time there following the death of Albert in 1861. In 1997 Queen Elizabeth II was heavily criticized in the British press for staying there rather than returning to London following the death of Diana the Princess of Wales. The 2006 movie “The Queen” highlighted this tragic period superbly and went some way in explaining her behaviour.

Of course the royal family have a number of residences to which they can spend time and they can visit virtually anywhere on the planet. However they have a number of places which seem to be dear to them. One such place is the Outer Hebrides and, in particular, the Isle of Harris. To this day various members of the royal family make the long trek to visit the islands. However it is Balmoral Castle which is most associated with the family’s private times.

The History Of The Spanish Steps - Rome’s Much-Loved Attraction

by Jill Kammer

The famous Roman Spanish Steps might be slightly misnamed since they were actually built by the French, but they are a wonderful part of any tourist’s visit to Rome. It is too easy to read about them and think, “What’s the big deal? They are just stairs.” And it is true that they are a means to an end - to walk to and from the Piazza di Spagna and the Villa Medici. But it is worth the effort to take your time on those steps and enjoy them for the ambiance they alone can hold for you.

The Scalinata di Spagna or the Spanish Steps, are 137 steps that were built between 1723 and 1725 near the famous Piazza di Spagna, which is a triangle shaped plaza that is a top destination for tourists who come to Rome.

The steps that you will find here are scenic, winding, elegant and artistic in their own right and they connect some areas of the city of Rome that are the most popular and beautiful in Italy. But the steps themselves are an attraction worth paying attention to. While they are lovely any time of year, the springtime causes them to burst with color and aroma as the azaleas from nearby municipal greenhouses explode with life.

In springtime the Spanish Steps come to life with flowers and people out enjoying the warm weather, knowing that it is soon to turn into a Roman summertime. Rome is capable of hot weather even into the fall. Near the steps there are elegant boutiques and a wide variety of shops, cafe’s and delightful restaurants to sample. While Roman law forbids it now, tourists and locals alike used to love to get a light lunch and sit on the steps to soak up the atmosphere. But even with the rules, Romans know that the law is often not followed to the letter and you can still enjoy this tradition if you do as Romans do when in Rome.

Near the lower entrance to the steps is another of the famous Bernini fountains called La Barcaccia or the Fountain of the Old Boat. This wonderful outdoor sculpture shows a sea faring vessel at the center of the fountain. There is reason to believe that the actual ship used in this fountain was designed by Bernini’s son, Gian Lorenzo. The water of the fountain “leaks” from open holes in this creative masterpiece that was commissioned by Pope Urbano VIII to be built by Bernini in 1627.

Enjoying a great work of outdoor art may put you in a literary mood so you can enjoy the Keats-Shelly Memorial House while you are there. After seeing two enjoyable sights, you may wish to partake in a cool beverage before you start your climb up the Spanish Steps.

Don’t worry about getting weary on your climb because the designers placed three rest areas with plenty of flat space for you to relax, do some shopping, have a beverage or a snack and recuperate before resuming your climb. When you successfully climb all of the steps, look back on a gorgeous view and then it is on to the Church of Trinta dei Monti.

This lovely church was originally known as Santissima Trinita al Monte Pincio. While the church was designed and construction started in 1502, it took almost 200 years to finish the job. The Gothic style is unique and the neo-classical facade also makes this church a personality all its own. The Roman fascination with Egyptian art which started in the third century is evident in the courtyard of the church which displays an artistic obelisk.

Just a short walk way is a well known spot known as the Via Veneto. This location became known in the 1950s as a place where a young girl could get pinched by a flirtatious Italian boy. While that kind of forward behaviour has calmed down in modern times, it is still a great area of Rome to shop, dine and enjoy the marvellous architecture all around you.

So put the Spanish Steps on your list of things you must see while in Rome. In that way you can say you walked on steps built by the French, named for a long gone Spanish Embassy and now an important part of your experience on your Roman holiday.

Things to Know and expect as an International Traveler.

by Neil J. Daniel

Once only the province of the wealthy and famous, international travel is now far more prevalent as technology has reduced costs and made it possible for the number of people to travel the world to increase dramatically. You do not need not be rich to engage in traveling this way; a well-planned itinerary is as close as your computer keyboard plus you can find a good airfare if you plan ahead and travel in the of peak seasons, generally in fall and spring.

You’ll find the cheapest fares in winter and if you’re traveling to Italy or Spain, this can be a plus and with mild winter temperatures you can be really adventurous and footloose. Many people are happy to rent out their homes on the continent and often for short periods so if you search online you may find you can extend your stay as the costs come down.

Rentals will usually include kitchen equipment, linens, telephone, internet connections and laundry facilities so you won’t be loosing any home comforts .There is nothing like having a breakfast when you are on vacation especially when you prepare it yourself and it gives you a chance to use fresh produce from a foreign country.

With your own laundry facilities it is easy to keep your washing clean and if there is internet access you can send your friends e-cards which won’t cost anything. Experiencing a different culture is a great adventure and it’s the little things that really reach out and grab you; for example, European society is similar in many ways to American society but daily priorities are quite different.

In America for example, meals can be rushed, even when they are not fast food driven whereas in Europe meals are a much more drawn out casual affair that can last many hours where friends and family gather and it is much safer walking around in the evening. Try new things; walk around your neighborhood and discover the bookstore, grocer, hardware, night club or restaurant and neighborhood businesses reflect the tempo of life in your chosen destination.

International travel exposes you to new cuisines and you may never taste an authentic Spanish Paella, French Pistou or Italian pizza unless you take the leap and immerse yourself in your travel destination of choice. Making the most of where you are staying is an important part of being an international traveler so when you are in cities make use of their transport systems which are generally very efficient and cheap.

However, if this is how you like to travel then restricting how much you carry with you is paramount and being able to fit everything you need into hand luggage can save a great deal of time at the airport. This of course means that to do this efficiently, it is good idea to carry everything you need for the trip in a carry on, which will make things simpler; no lost luggage or waiting around the luggage carousel at the airport.

Many people travel light like this, buying what they need at each destination which means they can make do with just a small bag for essentials. Travel does not have to be about huge luggage filled suitcases as truly adventurous travelers know.

Travel Insurance Aiii

by Roc Selly

Travel Insurance today is affordable and reassuring but the traveler must take time to understand what they have purchased. It is liberating to know that, just in case you’re out of luck, most traumatic events while travelling can be remedied or assisted by the cover you purchase before you leave. This far outweighs the disappointment of wishing you had spent a little extra on travel insurance. The potential risks encountered when travelling or leaving home for a length of time with only a few bags to hold your previous belongings can be daunting especially when you are surrounded by strangers who do not speak your language!

When buying travel insurance remember that the policy wording can be very involved and specific and underwriters are quick to refuse payment should your policy not cover even a single aspect of your insurance claim. There are certain precautions you need to take to ensure that any travel insurance claim you may have will be paid out and these are standard precautions that should keep you and your belongings safer in any case.

Here are a few examples of mistakes that might render you unworthy of a claim: having a different name on your travel documents to those on your passport (for example if you still have your passport in your maiden name and have booked your flight in your married name); not getting a police report to back up your claim; injury incurred while under the influence of alcohol and leaving baggage unattended in a case of theft.

If you can’t afford travel insurance then you can’t afford to travel. With the market of travel insurance being so competitive and the costs regularly reviewed and improved, what has always been a necessity when travelling can now be viewed in a pleasant light and no longer considered as a burden for the average traveler and holiday-maker.
